Facebook’s New Terms & Your Social Strategy

Facebook recently made a major announcement that’s music to the ears of small businesses around the world – – it has relaxed its terms and conditions regarding competitions promoted through the site.

Updates to the rules now allow LIKES and comments to be used as a voting tool without fear of breaking Facebook law and possibly having your Page closed down. Prior to the change, competitions could only be run through special third-party apps – a costly promotional tactic that didn’t always have the required reach.

Although asking users to share a post on their own or a friend’s timeline is still a no-no, the engagement and activity of LIKE or comment competitions still creates more exposure for your competition, therefore broadening your Page’s audience.

Coming from a small business background, it’s refreshing to see that Facebook recognised its terms were limiting companies on a budget from making the most of the site’s official Pages. Having a third-party app created for competitions was a long and costly process, especially for businesses low on resources hoping to increase their Facebook following through a giveaway.

So, now that these competitions are permitted by the social media giant, keep an eye out for more promotions and, if it fits into your marketing plan, utilise them – and get to LIKING and commenting!
