Five top tips for YouTube hits

19th September 2011 by Ed0

With total footage that would take over 100 years to watch, 2bn daily hits and availability in 22 countries achieved in only 6 years, YouTube is not only a major force to be reckoned with, but also a fantastic opportunity for organisational publicity.

However, with an ever-growing database diluting viewer attention, the ability to make a video stand out against the billions really is a challenge.

Although not a sure fire way to ensure a 100,000 viral knockout, my top 5 hints and tips to producing a hard-hitting YouTube video will help make sure your footage grabs the attention of viewers.

1.Plan before filming

Before starting your project, make sure to outline what footage you need. After all, who wants to watch a long series of moving images lacking basic cohesion?

2.Make it short, snappy and exciting

With declining online attention, viewers are looking for a short burst of video genius. Bite-size clips lasting less than a minute are ideal. Much longer and you risk losing your message.

3. Use quality editing software

Although the rise of the smart phone has allowed instant uploading of short videos, poor quality footage can put viewers off, regardless of content. All new desktops and laptops come with editing software as standard, so why not take advantage?

4.Avoid blatant advertising

If a video looks and feels like an advert, viewers won’t share it… unless it’s really cool!

5. Never underestimate the power of obscurity and humour

Just because a video is corporate, it doesn’t have to be boring. Think outside the box and always keep in mind what your viewers want to see.

Which of the above have worked for you? Let us know.
