LincsTweetMeet 2013 – Get to know your social media contacts OUTSIDE the digital world

17th June 2013 by Joe2

With Lincolnshire’s annual LincsTweetMeet just two weeks away, the message and idea behind the event has opened my eyes to the fact that I have over 100 LinkedIn contacts that I’ve never met in person. That’s not to say that’s a bad thing, but it’s made me take a step back and ask myself “Why have I not met any of these people?”

In a day and age where email and social networking has made communication 100x less personal than it was before the age of the internet, people, including myself at times, seem content to type a few lines to a friend or business contact instead of picking up the phone for a chat or visiting in person – but so much personality and emotion is lost in digital correspondence, especially when communicating with someone you’ve never actually met.

Developing and maintaining meaningful relationships requires more than sending a two-line email or digital message. You’ve got to laugh with, chat with and learn about the person. Hearing someone’s voice and intonation and, even better, taking in their physical appearance and gestures, help make communication more personal, therefore making the relationship stronger.

Social networking is a great way to START a relationship, but you’ve got to meet with and interact with people outside of the digital world once in a while in order to grow your relationship.

With that said, yes, I’m going to give a shameless plug to LincsTweetMeet now – not just because Lava is one of the event’s organisers, but because the idea behind it is something more people should consider when looking at their number of friends, followers, and contacts online.

LincsTweetMeet takes place at The Showroom in Lincoln on 27th June from 4 to 8pm. Come out and share a drink and a laugh with some of your local social media contacts, in person. To reserve a ticket, visit http://lincstweetmeet.co.uk.

If you’re a business person in Lincoln with social media contacts you’ve not met, LincsTweetMeet, and other local networking events, are the places to be to take your business relationships to the next level.
